| To measure the amount of dip, the Brunton compass is
placed on its side against the outcrop, with the small line level up. The bottom of the
Brunton has a small lever which controls the attitude of the line level and the attached
scale. When the Brunton is resting against a horizontal surface, this level and scale give
a dip of zero. When placed on a slope, the lever on the back is adjusted until the bubble
in the line level is centred. In the image, the Brunton is resting on the bedding plane
and the line level (top, just below the word 'WATERPROOF") is horizontal. The dip angle is given by the vernier scale opposite
the line level. |
