| To measure the amount of dip, the Brunton compass is placed on its side against the outcrop, with the small line level up. The bottom of the Brunton has a small lever which controls the attitude of the line level and it attached scale. When the Brunton is resting against a horizontal surface, this level and scale give a dip of zero.
