Image No. 1

This is an outcrop of Mississippian Banff Formation, beside Jura Creek in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains, Alberta, Canada. The site is about 1 hour drive west of Calgary, and about 45 minutes walk from the road. The view is looking north. The rock in the picture is tilted from its original depositional attitude. The visible plane is the top of a bedding surface.

Note the gravel-filled stream bed, dry at this time of year, on the lower right side of the image. The lower portion of the outcrop is scrubbed clean of organic materials and weathering each spring. The high water mark forms a more-or-less horizontal line.
